Actor-politician and founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Vijayakanth, passed away on December 28 in Chennai after battling illness. The 75-year-old leader was admitted to MIOT Hospital due to health complications, initially reported as COVID-19, but later clarified by the hospital as pneumonia. Despite being on ventilatory support, Vijayakanth's health continued to deteriorate, leading to his demise.
Vijayakanth's death marks the end of a prominent figure in Tamil cinema and politics. He was fondly known as "Captain" due to his roles portraying military characters on screen. In 2005, he transitioned to politics, establishing the DMDK. The party made its electoral debut in the 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, securing 10 percent of the vote share. Vijayakanth later aligned with the AIADMK in 2011, becoming the Leader of the Opposition after the alliance's victory. However, differences emerged, leading to a break in ties with the AIADMK.
Premalatha Vijayakanth, his wife, took charge as the DMDK's General Secretary on December 15, emphasizing her commitment to the party's welfare. Vijayakanth's political journey included serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011 to 2016 and representing constituencies like Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam.
The late leader's health had been a concern since November, and his demise comes as a significant loss to Tamil Nadu's political landscape. Tributes from political leaders and actors poured in, highlighting Vijayakanth's impact on both cinema and public service.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness, acknowledging Vijayakanth's legendary status in Tamil cinema and his significant contributions to politics. Modi remembered him as a close friend and praised his lasting impact on Tamil Nadu's political arena. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute, recognizing Vijayakanth's indelible mark on millions of hearts through his contributions to cinema and politics.
Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai expressed sorrow, describing Vijayakanth as a proud builder of the South Indian film industry and a compassionate figure addressing the needs of the working class.
The last rites of Vijayakanth are scheduled to be held with full state honors at the DMDK party office in Koyambedu on December 29, as announced by Chief Minister MK Stalin. The ceremony, expected to commence at 4.45 pm, will mark the end of an era in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.
Vijayakanth's demise leaves a void that will be hard to fill, given his charismatic performances in cinema and dedicated service in politics. As Tamil Nadu mourns the loss of a beloved leader, the legacy of "Captain" Vijayakanth will be remembered for his significant contributions to both the entertainment industry and public service.
